China has a long history and culture, together with rich natural resources and advanced handicraft. And the history of carpets in China is also very long. Antique carpets are perfect natural and manual accomplishments with fine work and gorgeous colors. And no high-tech elements are included in its dyeing and work. Antique carpets are not only ornaments and utilities that can add bright and color to your house but also works of art that are worthy of collection.
1. The wool quality of antique carpets is non-comparable for modern carpets.
In ancient times, the climate was cold and no pollution existed. Due to reasons of ecological environment and life styles, the grazing method was leave the flocks running on the broad grassland and not enclosed in sheepfolds. At that time, sheep breeding was not out of economic reasons and sheep grew up on the broad natural grassland. What they ate various weeds and herbal plants as food and drank pollution-free water, which made them very strong and the wool quality was very soft and warm and elastic. Though the content of cashmere was little but the wool was bright and lubricant. Antique carpets are mainly made of sheep wool while other kinds of wool will also be used in different regions such as yak hair, cow-hair, goat hair and camel hair and so on.
2. The color of antique carpets is also non-comparable for modern carpets.
Dyestuffs used for antique carpets are drawn from pure plants and ores with pure and gorgeous colors. The colors of antique carpets are soft, not glaring along with excellent color fastness. By now, after hundreds of years of hardship, the color of antique carpets has faded a little due to various natural or man-induced reasons (such as color damage resulted from corrosion by rainwater or children's urine). However, it has made the carpets display a more beautiful layer of color. Dyeing method of chemical color and plant color Interlacing represents a different history development period. Over 130 years ago, chemical colors just appeared and were very expensive and were not available for ordinary people. At that time, chemical colors were not very complete, and some plant colors had to be used. Sometimes some one might want to make the carpet more colorful but there were no such colors in plant colors, therefore chemical colors were used, such as pink color and green color and so on. But when it came to 80 years ago, chemical colors had generally become popular and prices were also lowered down, and a combination of plant colors with chemical colors had been adopted for the majority of carpets. However, when time developed to 40 years ago, chemical colors has been widely used for the majority of carpets as plant colors gradually became lacked and the variety of chemical color was complete and the price was cheap.
3. Hand spinning£º
At the beginning, there was no machine spinning industry and the handicraft industry was in its prime period in China. Cotton threads and woolen yarns were made manually with simple tools. There were no numerous procedures as with cotton threads and woolen yarns produced with machinery. Though they were not as regular and standard as cotton threads and woolen yarns produced with machinery, they were durable, firm, elastic and beautiful. It is really a pity that fewer and fewer people that have hand spinning skills as modern machine spinning can realize high speed, low cost, less land occupation and high efficiency.
4. Carpet production areas in China and their difference
